What is a Blemish?

Blemish, often characterized by skin discoloration or dark spots, sometimes know as Hyperpigmentation is a result of acne whiteheads, blackheads, or just plain old pimples that most of us acne sufferers are accustomed to. There are other types of skin blemishes for which we cannot blame acne, but occur in the skin naturally at birth. These are often referred to as port-wine stains.

The more common of the two types of course are blemishes caused by skin acne; which rear their ugly head when the pore becomes clogged with your natural body oil and infected with bacteria. This infection ultimately leads to the formation of Whiteheads or Blackheads. To make matters worse, the improper treatment of these acne lesions, such as picking or squeezing leads to the formation of scars or minor blemishes. I know it can be extremely tempting to pick or squeeze whiteheads, especially when you have a hot date, but avoid the temptation. Instead wrap an ice cube in a fine cloth and apply it to the pimple for about 2-3 minutes, this will slow down its growth and help you get through the evening.

Should the pimple accidentally burst open, and then the simple remedy to prevent the skin blemish from is to slice open a lemon and squeeze 10-15 drops onto a cotton ball and apply to the area for about ten minutes. The lemon juice will help neutralize the pH balance in the skin and prevent the blemish from forming and causing you much greater distress. On the other hand, if you already have some discoloration or blemishes, I would highly recommend that you read my page on acne blemish treatment for more information.

Other factors which can lead to skin irritation and therefore skin blemish are pollution which contains tons of unfriendly chemicals, too much stress and makeup. Therefore it is essential that you wash your face regularly, twice or three times a day, with a mild soap to remove any blemish causing impurities from the skin. In addition, when choosing makeup make sure it is labeled non-comedogenic, essentially what that means is that it will not cause the skin pores to clog; which is the notorious for causing acne and blemishes.
