Understanding Nodulocystic Acne

Nodulocystic Acne is the most devastating from of acne a person can ever experience. Not only is it painful to touch, it often leaves permanent disfiguring scars sometimes referred to as keloids as a constant reminder to its victims. Unfortunately, I cannot even begin to comprehend what the victim of Nodulocystic acne must go through. The only thing I can say is that the emotional scars must be as permanent as thephysical scars left behind.

According to statistics men are more likely to suffer from severe acne than women. Fortunately cases of severe acne like Nodulocystic are rare and only occur in small percentage of the population, but unfortunately its impact in terms of emotional as well as physical scarring is far greater than that of minor or moderate acne.

Acne cysts root themselves deep below the surface of the skin. Once they are infected, they began to form large deep puss filled pockets which continue to grow and appear as large lumps. The most common places where Nodulocystic acne tends to appear include the back, face, neck, chest and the arms.

Treatment Options

Unlike common acne (p acnes) which can easily be treated with agents such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, severe acne requires more aggressive forms of treatment which include tetracycline and gugulipid. Some studies have shown that these treatments have reduced the inflammatory lesions by as much as 62% - 68%. The drawback of using these treatments is that they have many unwanted side effects which could impact a person’s health negatively.

When it comes to treating this type of acne you need to consult and work with you family physician. He or she would be best able to advise you on the treatment options.
