Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing or “laser peel” or “lasabrasion” is still a relatively new and yet a very effective procedure for removal of unwanted scars caused by acne, chicken pox or scars resulting from other skin conditions. With this procedure a Carbon Dioxide (co2) laser is used to remove areas of damaged, scared or wrinkled skin layer by layer.

The advantages of laser skin resurfacing over other procedures include; Precision, very little if any bleeding and very little post-operative discomfort.

The actual procedure involved with laser skin resurfacing is quite simple. First, the co2 laser is used to strip away the outer layers of the damaged skin.

Then as your body begins to heal, it produces new more vibrant and tighter looking skin to take the place of damaged skin. However it is important to note these results are long term, but not permanent. As your body ages so will the new skin.

What You Should Know before Laser Resurfacing!

As with anything in life, preparation is always the key. Therefore prior to lasabrasion your surgeon may prescribe agents such as Retin-A or glycolic acid. The purpose of these agents is to prepare your skin for co2 laser treatment, reduce discoloration and optimize the healing process.

Your surgeon will advise you on the duration of use, however 6-8 weeks prior to your surgery is recommended. You may also be advised to continue using these products for a period of time after laser peel procedure for achieving best results.

Lasabrasion may be performed at accredited hospital or at your surgeon’s local facility. However it is a good idea to find out weather your surgeon has privileges to perform co2 laser surgery at an accredited hospital. This will help establish his/her credibility and give you piece of mind knowing you are dealing with a qualified professional

Note: Discoloration is likely to occur if you have dark or black skin.

What You Should Know During Laser Skin Resurfacing!

During laser peel you will likely be placed under local or general Anastasia. Local meaning you will be awake but you skin will be numb. General meaning you will sleep through the entire co2 laser process. The length of the surgery varies between 15-90 minutes depending on the area being treated. If you have any questions or concerns about the procedure discuss it openly with your surgeon.

What You Should Know After Laser Resurfacing!

Upon completion of the laser skin resurfacing procedure you are likely to experience mild swelling, slight discomfort and redness of the treated area. Your surgeon may treat the resurfaced skin with protective creams and ointments to help speed up the healing process.

Your skin may remain redish pink for some time after the skin resurfacing procedure. In some cases your surgeon may prescribe medication to lessen this affect dramatically.

After a period of couple of weeks, most patients can apply makeup to conceal the temporary change in your skin color. Also it is very important to protect your skin from sun light until you skin color returns to normal.

Other Considerations with Laser Skin Resurfacing!

Cost - Laser resurfacing can cost anywhere from $1500 to $4000 depending on skin surface being treated.

Recovery – Swelling can last from three days to three weeks. Your skin may take anywhere from 1 – 4 months to heal completely. This is especially the case with redness of the skin as some patients have reported redness lasting 3 or even 4 months.

Skin Care – You may require special creams or ointments for some time after the lasabrasion. This is an additional cost to co2 laser treatment.

Last but not least, if you are considering laser resurfacing or laser peel treatment discuss your expectations openly and honestly with your surgeon and expect the same in return.
