Green Tea and Acne Information

Over the past few years, many claims about green tea have been made. There is a perception out there that it has the ability to treat acne as well as prevent certain types of cancers and various other diseases. However, according to FDA most of these claims are unsubstantiated and have very little scientific data to support those claims.

Yes, Green tea is a drink of choice for many of the Chinese, Japanese, as well as Korean people for many centuries because of the many heath benefits it claims to have. And yes many people claim that their acne subsided or vanished completely. However, according to FDA studies, there is no evidence to support that green tea improves the skin condition of an acne sufferer or that it offers any other health benefits. But this does make one wonder, could so many people be wrong? And does FDA always tell us the truth?

Studies conducted by many of the well respected and credible institutes seem to suggest that green tea does in fact have many benefits and can aid in healing or preventing many different types of diseases including acne. For example, according to a study by CWRU's School of Medicine published in the April 13 2005 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that antioxidants found in green tea prevents or help treat rheumatoid arthritis. Another example which illustrates the benefits of tea is a paper published by Yale University School of Medicine. This paper provided a review of over 100 different studies done on green tea and concluded that high levels of polyphenols and other antioxidants found in green tea are directly related to low cancer cases in Asian people despite the fact that they smoke more than westerns.

While there are many more studies showing the benefits of green tea, everything from healing small cuts and wounds to preventing cancer and HIV infection. However I have not come across a single study specifically relating to green tea and it’s effectiveness as an acne treating agent. As such, before you rush off to buy green tea as a solution to your acne troubles, I would suggest you wait for solid evidence.
