Understanding-Genital Acne

When it comes to acne, no place is sacred even the sensitive genital areas .However unlike conventional acne which occurs on the upper and low back, chest, and of course your face, genital acne also know as folliculitis is a bit different. First of all, acne in the genital region does not result from the sebaceous glands becoming clogged due to excessive oil production and bacteria infection, instead genital ace is a result of completely different glands know as the apocrine glands becoming plugged with sweat and bacteria. it's interesting to note that this type of acne not only occurs on the genitals, but also other areas of the body which containing the apocrine glands such as the armpits or the scalp (leads to scalp pimples).

If you are experiencing genital acne, the first thing to do is to make sure that it is just that and not something else, like herpes or other sexual transmitted diseases. A quick way to get a rough idea is that herpes appear more like blisters often filled with fluids, whereas genital acne appears like small pimples. Also herpes generally tend to cover more area, for example, they tend spread onto the thighs, while acne on the genitals tends to remain stationary. However you should consult a medical professional to be sure and put your mind at rest.

Some of the most common causes associated with genital acne are, wearing tight fitted clothes, some laundry detergents and soaps, ingrown hair, sex. and race. Interestingly enough, genital acne (Hidradenitis Suppurativa) condition is much more prevalent in women than men. It is shown that women are four or five times likely to experience acne on the genitals than men. To remedy the first two factors, it is advisable to wear loose fitted clothing over tight fitted clothing. This will allow ample air movement and prevent the sweat from getting trapped between the clothing and you skin. Also you may consider switching detergent brands to something more natural and gentle for the skin. Other factors which lead to this type of acne are ingrown hair. If you have excessive ingrown hair speak with your doctor and he or she will advise the best course of action.

As far as treatment of genital acne is concerned, you should follow similar treatment and precautions as you would with normal ace unless it is very severe in which case consult your physician. The general rule of thumb is to not pick or squeeze genital acne as this will only spread the bacteria and lead to more acne. You might consider using benzoyl peroxide pads available at the local super market or herbal treatments such as clearpores.
