Cause of Acne – The Underlying FactorsTo date neither technology nor the medical community has determined the exact cause of acne. However much research has been done in this field and we now know more about the factors which contribute to the formation of acne. One of these factors is the rapid changing level of male sex hormones called androgens, which are present in both boys and girls. They are a leading cause of acne as they cause the sebaceous glands to increase in size and causing them to produce more oil. This oil mixed with dead skin cells and infected with bacteria causes the acne pimple to form within the skin pores. Other factors include passing of acne through genetics (parent to child), which has been proven by numerous studies. And in women acne has been linked to their menstrual period. Generally it tends to appear and wreak havoc 3 to 7 days before their period. Although not a direct cause of acne, Stress, is known to aggravate acne flare-ups. Furthermore many women and men have noted that certain medications including androgens, lithium, and barbiturates seem to worsen or aggravate acne. Women in particular have also found that using greasy make-up has the tendency to clog up the follicles in the skin and thus leading to more acne. Perspiration trapped in clothing, especially during a workout, tight clothing, picking and squeezing pimples, are some of the other factors which are a cause of acne.
