Age and Adult Acne

Like most young adults, I grew up with having acne flare-ups more often than I wanted. It’s almost as if “Acne” had me on its calendar because it never failed to pay me a visit at least two or three times a year. Summer and Christmas were the worst times but you all know “Murphy’s law” as well as I do, acne happened when least wanted; not that I wanted it at all. And those of you who also suffer from this nasty skin condition will know exactly what I mean.

When I turned twenty, boy was I ever relived to know that as and adult I will no longer suffer from acne, and that it will finally leave me alone after all these years. But boy was I wrong. Two months after my twentieth birthday, in the middle of summer, my friend acne returned. I was somewhat surprised and extremely disappointed to discover that adults also suffer from acne.

My point here is that contrary to popular belief that there is no such thing as adult acne, it is not true. In fact many adults suffer from acne much the same way as young teenagers do. Acne does not distinguish between ages. Both menand women as young as age 60 have been known to fall victim to acne. Granted, the number of adults over sixty years of age suffering from acne is small, but none the less, it does happen.

While adult acne does not differentiate between ages, it does discriminate. For instance, latest statistics seem to suggest that only about 25% of the adult men and more than 50% of the adult females are impacted negatively by acne. Some professionals believe that cosmetics are the cause of this sharply high figure, while others believe the menstrual cycle is the culprit. Regardless of cause, one thing is clear; women have the short end of the stick when it comes to adult acne. And sadly, this trend is continuing with out and end in sight.

The good news for us is that adult acne can be treated in much the same way as teen acne. After all, regardless of whether you are a grown up or a teenager the cause of acne is all the same. And therefore, adult acne can be treated or prevented in much the same way as treating teen acne.
