Before using Benzoyl Peroxide or any acne product, it is import that you take a moment and educate yourself about the risks and benefits associated with that particular acne treatment. Then and ONLY then you should proceed with that particular acne treatment.

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

It is a non-prescription medication that has been used for over 25 years to treat mild to moderate form of acne. Benzoyl Peroxide works by killing the bacteria responsible for causing acne. It comes in various forms such as Gels, Creams and Lotions.

How to Use This Medication

For proper use of this acne medication, first wash the affected skin areas and gently dry the infected area with a soft dry towel. Apply small amounts of Benzoyl Peroxide to the infected area and rub it gently. Use only as directed by you medical professional. Do not use more or less of it, or more often then directed by medical professional or product labeling.

Avoid products such as abrasive soaps, alcohol-containing products, cosmetics or soaps that dry the skin, unless otherwise advised by your doctor. Like with all good things, you must allow some time, at least 4-6 weeks for this acne medication to take effect.

My personal experience with Benzoyl Peroxide was “Not Bad”. It was reasonably easy to use and got the job done. However I did experience some itching, dryness and peeling of skin.

Possible Side Effects – You Must Know:

In some cases people have reported cases of extreme burning sensation, rash, swelling and extreme itchiness. Also, even though there is no conclusive evidence, scientists believe that Benzoyl peroxide can cause cancer. Especially if the skin treated with this acne treatment is exposed to sun light. Hence the warnings on Benzoyl containing products telling you to stay out of the sun or apply sunscreen.

Yet despite the warnings and other side effects, quite a number of people are using Benzoyl Peroxide. If you like, give it a go. However there are a number of 100% natural Herbal Treatments that are Safe, Effective, No Side Effects and work just as well if not better. I personally use Clear Pores Skin Cleansing System

Wikipedia - Information on Benzoyl Peroxide - Benzoyl peroxide is highly effective in the treatment of most forms of acne. It is typically placed over the affected areas in gel or cream form, in concentrations of 10% and lower. However, it can cause dryness and irritation. A small percentage of people are sensitive to it and this is characterised by burning, itching, peeling or possibly swelling.

It is best to use a little at first and build up as the skin becomes accustomed to the treatment. To avoid this, it is worth looking for a treatment that contains around 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, which studies show is as effective as the 10% options but with fewer side effects. While it is not fully known how benzoyl peroxide works in fighting acne, it is presumed that benzoyl peroxide is easily absorbed into pores where it works by interfering with acne bacterial metabolism through oxidation.
